5 Reasons Why Athletes Don’t Communicate

Coaches might ask, “Why should I care if players talk during a match as long as they work hard?”

The short answer would be: “misunderstandings and miscommunication between players can destroy otherwise well-prepared tactics”.

Communication is important for performance

Studies of team performance suggest that effective communication can positively influence the outcome of a football match.

Task-oriented key phrases such as man-on, time, back, turn, easy-pass, switch, keepers, away are examples of words that help players read the game and make quick decisions in fast-paced sports like football.

Therefore coaches want players to talk, but most importantly, they would want it to be task specific.

Before implementing new standards, it is a good idea to assess the team's current level of verbal interactions. A player's on-field communication is affected by several factors, and knowing what they are will help clarify the next steps.

Underlying factors coaches often find when looking into the lack of player communication

Not a habit

If communication skills are not deliberately practised during training drills, or they don’t receive regular feedback to know if they get it right; it will not come naturally to players during matches.

Uncertain about what to say

Players may not fully understand the game plan, communication roles, or unique team concepts, even if they nod when the coach asks. As a result, they do not know what to say when they are out there on the field.

Feeling insecure

Some players might not feel it is their place to be vocal when more skilled or senior players are present. Especially if the coach has not established clear lines of communication and expectations.

Not understanding the value

Some players underestimate how important communication is for quickly guiding teammates into the right defensive formations. Or don’t know how much it helps teammates make good passing decisions during a game.

Complacency

Sometimes players might feel a sense of security and perhaps not communicate as much if they are in the lead. Maintaining a high level of communication throughout the entire game will help the team stay focused. It is crucial because becoming complacent allows the opposition to hit back and potentially cause an upset.
